The Edit with Elin Stuart
For interior stylist Elin Stuart, outdoor spaces should feel just as personal and inviting as the rooms inside a home. Inspired by English gardens, her outdoor oasis blends layered greenery, soft textiles and thoughtful details to create a calm, lived-in atmosphere designed for slow, everyday moments.

About Elin
You designed your garden yourselves, what was your vision for the space?
We wanted to create a calm and welcoming space inspired by English gardens. Somewhere that felt soft, green, natural and lived in – a place where we could spend as much time outdoors as possible.
For someone wanting to create their own outdoor oasis, where would you suggest they begin?
Start by thinking about how you want to use the space and how the sun moves during the day. Then build slowly over time with plants, seating areas and materials that create a cosy, personal feeling.

What do you think gives a garden character and depth?
Layering. Mixing flowers, greenery, textures, colours and different heights. Small details and personal spaces also make a big difference.
How can textiles shape the feel of an outdoor space?
Textiles create that final cosy and welcoming feeling outdoors. Cushions, tablecloths and soft fabrics add warmth and make the space feel more inviting and lived in.
I think outdoor spaces should be styled just like indoor ones, with textiles, furniture and lighting that create a warm, personal atmosphere. Layered details and soft materials can turn a garden or terrace into a true outdoor living room where you want to spend hours.
