LILO KLINKENBERG: DESIGNING WITH FEELING

When Bemz invited Berlin-based floral artist Lilo Klinkenberg to design her first textile collection, it offered a new medium for her distinctive visual language. Colour, contrast, texture, proportion and atmosphere connect every part of Lilo's practice – from flowers and objects to interiors and spaces. With Flowers For A Home, those same visual instincts find a new expression in fabric.

FROM FASHION TO FLOWERS

Originally trained in fashion design, Lilo developed an early sensitivity to colour, material and composition. But over time, her focus shifted from dressing people to shaping spaces.

After opening and designing a restaurant with her siblings in Berlin, flowers entered Lilo’s world almost by accident. Styling events soon became creating installations, and installations became a new creative language. One that allowed her to explore a feeling in a way no other material could.

Their colour, texture and organic presence have the ability to soften a room, introduce contrast and subtly change how a space is experienced. But flowers are just one expression of Lilo's wider creative language. The same instincts around colour, proportion, material and space run through every part of her practice – and now find a new medium in Flowers For A Home.

WHERE FEELING COMES FIRST

For Lilo, a home is never simply a collection of furniture or carefully chosen objects. It's something far more personal.

She approaches interiors in much the same way she creates floral installations. First she thinks about mood, then considers how colour, texture and proportion interact to create either harmony or tension.

For Lilo, that also means knowing when to hold back. She likes interiors to create a calm platform for the flowers, plants, art and objects within them, rather than competing for attention. It's an idea that carries into Flowers For A Home: the textiles add depth and presence, while leaving space for the other elements of a room to tell their own story.

Rather than striving for perfection, she believes the most memorable spaces are the ones that evolve naturally over time.

"For me, interiors are a form of self-expression. They are a collection of memories, objects and materials that I want to live with every day,” she says.

It's this perspective that makes Flowers For A Home feel so instinctive. The collection isn't designed to follow trends, but to become part of your evolving home's story.

THE BEAUTY OF CONTRAST

Contrast is a recurring thread throughout Lilo's work. Soft meets structured. Flowing forms sit beside architectural lines. Romantic motifs clash with bold graphics. Even her colour palette is built around combinations that feel both familiar and unexpected.

Growing up in Berlin, she explains, may have influenced that way of thinking. A city built on contrasts has naturally shaped the way she sees design.

Rather than chasing newness for its own sake, Lilo is interested in what happens when familiar references are seen differently. For Flowers For A Home, that meant returning to damask – a centuries-old decorative tradition – and exploring how colour, texture, scale and materiality could make it feel relevant again.

DESIGNED TO EVOLVE

Working with flowers means working with something inherently temporary. Turning her attention to textiles gave Lilo the opportunity to consider the opposite: what stays, what returns and what continues to feel relevant over time.

Whether styling flowers, designing interiors or creating textiles, Lilo believes the most successful spaces are never truly finished. Just like the flowers that inspire her, spaces should grow slowly, gathering memories and meaning over time.

Lilo’s advice is refreshingly simple: take your time, don't overthink, and don't be afraid of colour.

Because ultimately, the homes we remember most aren’t the most perfect. They're the ones that feel personal.
