Expression at Home with Tanja Demmerath
Based in Berlin, Tanja Demmerath has built a career shaping how design is seen, understood and experienced. As the founder of a PR agency, she works at the intersection of interiors, lifestyle and storytelling, bringing a thoughtful perspective to the spaces we live in. At home, however, that perspective becomes more intuitive and personal – a space where meaning unfolds layer by layer, over time. Discover Tanja’s Expression At Home.

At home, however, expression becomes more intuitive and personal. A space where meaning is uncovered layer by layer, over time. It’s this contrast, between the structured world of her work and the instinctive nature of her home, that defines her approach to living with design.

A QUIET COUNTERPART
Where Tanja’s work is rooted in shaping narratives for others, her home allows her own story to naturally unfold. It’s not about perfection, but creating an atmosphere that evokes a sense of warmth and ease from arrival.
“I believe a home should never feel like a finished picture,” Tanja says. “It should feel like an ongoing conversation between past and present, function and beauty, calm and creativity, and the people who live in that place.”

THE INVISIBLE LANGUAGE OF SPACE
For Tanja, design goes far beyond the visual.
“The spaces we create around us quietly shape the way we feel, think and relate to others, often more than we consciously realise,” she explains.
Light, materials, and even the way we move through a room, form what Tanja describes as a kind of silent language. One that influences mood, clarity and connection in subtle, yet powerful ways.

A SENSE OF INTENTION
The spaces that stay with Tanja are the ones that feel honest. Built on a strong sense of identity, where every element has a purpose and nothing feels arbitrary or overly decorative. There is a certain calm confidence in these interiors. They don’t try to impress, they simply are.
Materials play a defining role. Natural, tactile surfaces like wood, linen and stone carry time within them, becoming richer with use. These are not static spaces, but evolving ones – places that allow life to settle in.
For Tanja, restraint is equally essential. Knowing what to leave out matters just as much as what to include. A well-edited space gives room for the eye to rest, and for key pieces to speak with clarity.
As Tanja says, “In the end, we don’t remember perfectly styled rooms. We remember how a place made us feel.”

DESIGNED FOR TOGETHERNESS
“Sometimes people ask if it’s a special occasion,” she says. “But we’re simply celebrating being together.”
A defining feature of the space is the custom-built bar, inspired by her father, and designed as a natural point of connection. A place where conversations begin, and moments unfold effortlessly.
WHERE OBJECTS HOLD MEANING
From a sculptural onyx dining table to a forged fireplace screen created by her father, each piece in Tanja’s home carries a story. Alongside these are quieter pieces – textiles, ceramics, books and handmade objects from her children. They are all subtle layers that shape the atmosphere in deeply personal ways.
“I’m not drawn to objects purely for their appearance. I’m drawn to what they hold,” explains Tanja.

A HOME IN MOTION
Tanja embraces change as part of living. As life evolves, so does the space around her.
“I don’t believe a room is ever truly finished, and I actually prefer it that way,” she says. “A home should reflect where you are in life, not where you once were.”

THE POWER OF SIMPLE
Some of the most meaningful details are the simplest. From almost every room, Tanja can see the sky, bringing light, movement and perspective into her home. “It’s such a simple thing, but it creates a constant sense of openness and connection.”
INTUITION OVER RULES
“I’ve never been drawn to spaces where everything feels too coordinated,” says Tanja.
Instead, she embraces contrast and intuition, mixing materials, styles and functions in a way that feels natural rather than prescribed. Because ultimately, the most compelling spaces are not the most perfect, but the most personal.
