Bemz in the press

Never go out of print

With new fabrics out from Scandi designers and our own Orla Kiely, it’s time to add something that’s sew special.

The sun’s out and it’s officially DIY season. Time, therefore, for the crafty to uncover the sewing machine and scissors. There are so many beautiful new fabrics out there this season, and they won’t fashion themselves into the sofa of your dreams, will they?

Well, they will if you order from, a Scandi firm that makes unique covers for your Ikea furniture — as well as cushion covers, curtains and other accessories — from its range of fabrics, such as the mid-century Stig Lindberg Tallyho fabric and the Aquatic fabric by Camilla Lundsten.

Making a bigger splash this season, however, is Ireland’s own Orla Kiely, who wrote the book on patterns — quite literally. Her home-inspired hardback celebration of all things printed, called Pattern, was released in 2010.

Now, Kiely has collaborated with the British soft furnishings house Ashley Wilde to create a new collection of printed fabrics. It features her classic designs Linear Stem, Abacus Flower, Seventies Oval Flower and the signature Multi Stem print, as well as a few other patterns fans will know.

They’re printed on 100% cotton canvas in a palette of yellows, pale blues and muddy greens and greys — or, in the Kiely lexicon, dandelion, seagrass, pale rose, persimmon and duck egg. They’re very identifiable as Kiely’s work but, as her bedding collections proved, her patterns work really well in large formats such as on tables and curtains.

Finally, the Dublin-based is now the stockist of Flock, a range of fabrics from emerging talents — artists, designers and recent graduates — with a focus on colour and geometric designs.

There’s also a Flock range of vibrant woollen fabrics, woven from new wool in Scotland with two colours per design, such as red on pink or turquoise on green.

Orla Kiely’s Striped Petal, pictured, works well in large formats, as well as her signature Multi Stem pattern, all in various colourways from Home Focus at Hickeys. €24.95 per metre,

French Lelievre’s robust fabrics are smart and retro or intricate and timeless. Pictured are the Gaucho, Vacoa, Lande, Bali and Lama textiles, from the Evasions collection. From €79.80 per metre,

The unique Aquatic fabric by the Swedish designer Camilla Lundsten for Littlephant can be made into any Ikea fabric cover by Bemz. From €229,

Ikea’s Stockholm 2017 range includes this wave fabric in blue and grey tones, made of recycled and sustainable cotton. From €7 per metre,

Bemz’s Tallyho fabric by Stig Lindberg was designed in the 1950s but has never dated. Prices start at €189 for the Ikea Karlstad armchair cover.
